Derealization is another word for the rehabilitating symptom of anxiety known as depersonalisation, the feeling where you are disconnected from your self, from your past, and your identity. For me personally, having suffered with anxiety for more than 5 years, I’ve gotten used to it, so used to it, that i forgot what it feels like to feel normal.
When you are depersonalised, you look at other people who are living normal lives, having fun, or doing different worldly activities, shopping etc. To you, they look like they are strange, for behaving the way they do. It seems like you’re the only one who is seeing things from the reality. You may ask, “what are these people doing having fun planning a get together? what’s the point? they’re just going to see people, engage in some pointless discussions, fill their stomachs and go back home to sleep and wake up to another day….” or “don’t people realise how pointless life is? going through the same motions? what’s the point, when everything will be destroyed and they will die very soon?”
this mentality may even effect you when you are seeing islamic speakers and sheikhs have senses of humour. You may think they don’t understand the reality of the Day of Judgement.
Anyways, realise these thoughts are all products of the anxiety sensation known as depersonalisation. It’s a disorder, and it affects perception.
One thing that can help you bring some sanity to your depersonalised life is to reflect on this ayah.
Know that the life of this world is play, and entertainment, and beautification and boasting between you, and competition in money and children, similar to a farmer who is pleased with good crops, then the crops become yellow and dies out. And in the afterlife, is a severe punishment and forgiveness and pleasure from Allah. And the life of this world is nothing but deceiving enjoyment. 57
At least thinking about this, you can look at all the people living their lives, for what it really is; namely a deceptive, temporary delusional place of residence. Our real home is jannah.
