“God is Dead” -Nietzsche in “Parable of the Madman”
He didn’t literally mean that God was alive then perished. What he meant was that the concept of God being eradicated in the minds and hearts of people. People are the ones who turned the Ever Living God into a “figment of people’s imagination.” That’s what his poem is about.
In the age we live in, we too are experiencing this idea, where people who are “intelligent” deny the existence of God, and rather rely on evolution to explain how everything came into existence.
Secularism caused shifts in society that were never before seen in history. The effects of this movement was a focus on God to a focus on the Universe. There used to be a focus on life after death, and instead the sole focus became this life. There was a shift from focusing on the heart and soul, to the mind and body. And the mind/body connection is where the foundations of psychology were built on. Personality and emotions are nothing more than chemicals in the brain, and can be explained through neurotransmitters and hormones alone. This is why all psychological disorders are due to chemical imbalances in the brain.
In our times, many people are suffering from low self esteem as most of us can relate to. Is there a connection with what I just talked about? I argue that yes, there is……
Because God has been taken out of society and mainstream life, where do people now get their value? We always need some reason to feel valuable. There has to be something that makes us who we are. What makes us special and stand out? What can we do to be somebody?
Our society places emphasis on accomplishments, beauty, strength, intelligence, and other things. If you have some of these things, you are good. These are the bases for comparisons all throughout school. What are kids in school doing? They are comparing to others, wanting to fit in, feel like they belong, etc. And is there any God in the picture? Not really. At best, God is a nominal concept in the practical life of society. And since God doesn’t really matter to people, they have to seek their value and worth in other things besides God. When in reality, what makes us who we are, and what makes us so special is simply having an amazing God who gave us life, abilities, intelligence.
و ما بكم من نعمة فمن الله
And whatever blessing you have, so it is from God. 16:53
May Allah help us to internalize that every thing we have is from Him.
